Shedding Light on India’s Struggle with Food Poverty

India’s recent ranking of 111th out of 125 countries in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) for 2023 has brought to the forefront the gravity of food poverty in the country. But what exactly is the GHI, and how does it illuminate the stark reality of people’s suffering from hunger?

The GHI serves as an annual report, jointly published by Concern Worldwide and Welt Hunger Hilfe, aimed at comprehensively assessing and monitoring hunger levels on global, regional, and national scales, taking into account various aspects of hunger over time. The GHI score operates on a 100-point scale, with 0 representing the best score (indicating no hunger) and 100 representing the worst.

In the most recent report, India’s overall GHI score stands at 28.7 as of 2023, placing it in the “serious” category on the GHI Severity of Hunger Scale. While this reflects a slight improvement from the 2015 GHI score of 29.2, which was also deemed serious, it still underscores the significant challenges the country faces in tackling hunger amidst its burgeoning population of 1.486 billion, surpassing that of China.

However, the crucial question remains: Can everyone afford food?According to a recent NITI Aayog report, while 13.5 crore individuals have risen above the poverty line, a staggering 74.1 percent of the Indian population grapples with the inability to afford a single nutritious meal. Addressing this dire situation becomes the collective responsibility of Indian citizens to uplift their vulnerable counterparts and help break the cycle of poverty. Raising awareness about the urgency of conducting food drives for the impoverished and homeless, alongside fundraising efforts, becomes imperative, as these actions could potentially save lives, with every small contribution making a significant impact.

Pephands voices the global issue! Despite the challenges, finding a reliable platform to support this cause is not an insurmountable task. Pephands, a benevolent community, has taken on the noble mission of amplifying the voices of the needy and facilitating the process of reaching out to nearby resources through the support of communities, friends, and generous donors through crowd funding platform. With a commitment to philanthropy, Pephands conducts a Food Drive @ Rs. 40, enabling anyone to make a small contribution from just Rs. 40 to provide meals for the homeless and underprivileged individuals in society, one plate at a time.

Whether it’s the isolated and neglected individuals on the streets, at railway stations, or bus stops, or those who are otherwise vulnerable, the shared experience of hunger transcends social boundaries. we knew hunger is common for all stomachs, and helping them with one good nutritious food at a time ensures the hope for another day serving the purpose of life and trust in humanity!
