Can a Mammogram Detect Lobular Cancer? | Simple Guide

A mammogram is an X-ray test used to check the breasts for signs of breast cancer.

It can find many breast cancers at an early stage. But some types of breast cancer can be harder to see on a mammogram.

One of them is lobular breast cancer.

A mammogram can detect lobular cancer, but sometimes the changes may not be very clear. This is because lobular cancer can grow differently from other types of breast cancer.

What Is Lobular Breast Cancer?

Lobular breast cancer starts in the lobules of the breast.

Lobules are the small glands that produce milk.

In some cases, cancer cells can move outside these glands and grow into nearby breast tissue. This is called invasive lobular breast cancer.

This type of cancer may not always form a clear lump. Instead, the cancer cells can spread through the breast tissue in a different pattern.

Because of this, it can sometimes be difficult to notice.

Can a Mammogram Find Lobular Cancer?

Yes, a mammogram can find lobular breast cancer.

But it may not always be easy to see.

A mammogram may show:

  • A change in breast tissue
  • An unusual thick area
  • A change in breast shape
  • An abnormal area in the breast
  • Changes that need more tests

Sometimes, lobular cancer does not appear as a clear lump on the mammogram.

This does not mean mammograms are not useful. Mammograms are still an important part of breast cancer screening.

Why Is Lobular Cancer Harder to Detect?

Many breast cancers form a lump that can be easier to see or feel.

Lobular cancer can be different.

The cancer cells may grow in small lines through the breast tissue instead of forming one clear lump.

Because of this:

  • The lump may not be easy to feel.
  • Changes may be difficult to see on a mammogram.
  • The breast may only feel thicker in one area.
  • Changes may develop slowly.
  • More tests may sometimes be needed.

This is why women should also pay attention to any unusual changes in their breasts.

What Are the Signs of Lobular Breast Cancer?

Lobular cancer may not always cause a clear lump.

Some possible signs include:

  • Thickening in one part of the breast
  • A breast feeling different than usual
  • Change in breast size or shape
  • Changes in the breast skin
  • Dimpling or pulling of the skin
  • Changes around the nipple
  • A nipple turning inward
  • A new or unusual change that does not go away

These changes do not always mean cancer.

But if you notice something unusual, it is important to speak with a doctor.

What Other Tests May Be Needed?

If a mammogram does not give a clear result, a doctor may suggest other tests.

These may include:

  • Ultrasound: Uses sound waves to look at breast tissue.
  • Breast MRI: Gives more detailed pictures of the breast.
  • Diagnostic Mammogram: Takes more detailed X-ray images of a particular area.
  • Biopsy: A small amount of breast tissue is taken and tested to check for cancer.

The doctor will decide which test is needed based on the person's symptoms and test results.

Should You Ignore a Breast Change After a Normal Mammogram? No.

A normal mammogram does not mean that every possible breast problem can be ignored.

If you notice a new or unusual change in your breast, talk to a doctor even if your recent mammogram was normal.

Pay attention to your body.

If something feels different, getting medical advice can help you understand the reason.

Why Is Breast Cancer Awareness Important?

Awareness helps people understand the importance of breast health.

It can encourage women to:

  • Know the possible signs of breast cancer
  • Pay attention to breast changes
  • Attend recommended breast screening
  • Speak to a doctor when something feels unusual
  • Learn more about different types of breast cancer
  • Encourage friends and family to be aware too

Talking about breast cancer can help more people understand when they should seek medical advice.
