Why Is Lobular Breast Cancer Harder to Detect? |Pephands Foundation

When people think about breast cancer, they often think about finding a lump. But not every breast cancer appears as a clear lump.

Lobular breast cancer can sometimes cause more subtle changes. This is why knowing how your breasts normally look and feel, and paying attention to unusual changes, is important.

What Is Lobular Breast Cancer?

Lobular breast cancer begins in the lobules, the glands in the breast that produce milk. One of the common forms is called invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC).

When it becomes invasive, the cancer cells have moved beyond the lobules into the surrounding breast tissue.

Unlike some breast cancers, lobular breast cancer may not always form a firm or easily noticeable lump. Instead, a person may notice changes such as:

  • Thickening in one area of the breast
  • A feeling of fullness
  • Changes in breast shape
  • An area that feels different from the surrounding tissue

Why Is Lobular Breast Cancer Harder to Detect?

The way lobular breast cancer grows can make it more difficult to notice. The cancer cells may grow in lines through the breast tissue rather than forming one distinct mass.

Because of this:

  • A clear lump may not always be present.
  • Changes can be subtle in the early stages.
  • The breast may simply feel thicker or different.
  • It can sometimes be more difficult to identify on a mammogram.

This is why breast awareness should not focus only on looking for a lump.

What Are the Symptoms?

Lobular breast cancer symptoms can vary from person to person. Some people may have very few noticeable changes, especially in the beginning.

Possible symptoms can include:

  • Thickening or hardening in the breast
  • Fullness or swelling in one area
  • A change in the size or shape of the breast
  • Changes in breast skin or texture
  • Nipple changes, including turning inward
  • A lump in the breast or underarm
  • An area that feels different from the rest of the breast

These symptoms do not always mean cancer. Many non-cancerous conditions can also cause breast changes. However, a new or persistent change should not be ignored.

When Should You Consult a Doctor?

You do not need to wait until a breast change becomes painful or develops into a large lump.

Consider consulting a healthcare professional if you notice:

  • A new lump or thickening
  • Persistent swelling or fullness
  • Changes in breast size or shape
  • New nipple or skin changes
  • Any unusual breast change that does not go away

A doctor can examine the change and recommend appropriate tests if needed.

Why Do We Need More Awareness?

Breast cancer awareness is not only about knowing that a lump can be a warning sign. People should also understand that different types of breast cancer can show different changes.

Creating awareness can encourage people to:

  • Pay attention to changes in their breasts
  • Understand symptoms beyond a lump
  • Talk openly about breast health
  • Seek medical advice for unusual changes
  • Share accurate awareness with family and friends

Sometimes, a simple awareness message can encourage someone to take a health change seriously.

Let’s Run to Create More Awareness

To bring more people into this conversation, Pephands Foundation is organising the Run for Life Breast Cancer Awareness Marathon on October 25, 2026, at Phoenix Marketcity Chennai, Velachery.

With a registration fee of ₹599, participants can come together and help take the message of breast cancer awareness into the community.

Register today and encourage your friends, family, and colleagues to join you.

Every person who joins can help:

  • Start conversations about breast health
  • Encourage women to notice unusual changes
  • Spread awareness about different breast cancer signs
  • Take an important health message to more families

For you, it may be a run.

For someone watching, it could be the moment they learn that breast cancer does not always begin with a lump.

Run for awareness. Run for the women around us. Run so that an important message reaches someone who needs it.

Because every step can carry awareness a little further.
