On December 6, 2023, Pephands Foundation launched the Pephands Flood Relief Program to support people affected by Cyclone Michaung in Chennai. This powerful cyclone left many areas submerged, cutting off essential services like electricity, internet, and communication. Despite the challenges, Pephands Foundation mobilized its team to provide critical relief and assistance to those in need.
Chennai, known for its heavy monsoon rains, faced one of its worst weather events with Cyclone Michaung. The cyclone brought non-stop rainfall for two days, flooding entire neighborhoods and leaving streets and homes submerged in knee-deep water. Boats became the only way to navigate through the city, transforming once-busy roads into waterlogged channels.
The heavy rainfall and flooding led to tragic consequences, with at least 18 people losing their lives in Tamil Nadu. The devastation echoed memories of the 2015 floods, highlighting the urgent need for immediate relief and recovery efforts.
Recognizing the urgent need for assistance, Pephands Foundation swiftly organized the Flood Relief Program to provide immediate support to the affected communities. Despite damaged communication networks and difficult weather conditions, the Pephands team coordinated their efforts and reached out to the most severely affected areas.
The relief program focused on providing essential survival kits containing:
The Pephands Flood Relief Program achieved significant milestones through targeted relief efforts:
✅ December 6, 2023 – The Pephands team began their relief efforts by reaching the worst-affected area of Velachery, where they provided assistance to 70+ people stranded due to the floodwaters.
✅ December 7, 2023 – Volunteers extended their support to Perumbakkam, helping 120 differently-abled individuals. They also reached the Semmencheri Housing Board area, distributing food and water to over 200 people.
✅ December 8, 2023 – Pephands volunteers distributed food to 500 people transported from Madipakkam to Perumbakkam. This was made possible through the dedicated efforts of Mr. Nirmal, a social activist, with the support of Seyal Foundation and No Food Waste Organization.
✅ December 9, 2023 – Pephands Foundation partnered with Terminate Hunger Welfare Organization to distribute over 800 food packs at Perumbakkam. This included 500 packs from Terminate Hunger and additional support from Pephands Foundation.
By the end of the initial phase of the relief program, Pephands Foundation had provided food and essential supplies to over 2,000 people across flood-affected areas. The foundation remains committed to continuing these relief efforts until the affected communities regain stability.
The program’s impact went beyond just providing food and water—it restored hope and reinforced the strength of community support during challenging times.
